    “St. John Chrysostom Orthodox Research Group” First International Conference

    With the participation of Associates of the

    Volos Academy for Theological Studies

    November 30-December 1, 2018, Prague, Czech Republic

    On November 30 – December 1, 2018 the first International Conference of the St. John Chrysostom Orthodox Research Group was successfully held in Prague (Czech Republic) on the topic “Understanding Orthodox Spirituality.” The conference was organized in cooperation with the Protestant Theological Faculty of the Charles University in Prague and attended by Orthodox scholars from all over Europe in order to study various aspects of the Orthodox Spirituality with special focus on the theology of the Holy Spirit.

    During the afternoon of the first day the participants of the conference visited an icon exhibition organized by Dr. Ivana Noble, Professor of Ecumenical Theology of the Charles University at the Jabok College library. The visit was followed by a public lecture given by Dr. Noble on the topic “Can Icons be painted in a Western Key?”

    The Volos Academy for Theological Studies was represented by Dr. Nikolaos Asproulis, Deputy Director of the Volos Academy and Lecturer at the Hellenic Open University (“Personhood, Theosis and a Spirituality of the Secular. An Eastern Orthodox Perspective”) and Dr. Nikos Kouremenos, Research Fellow of the Fondazione per le scienze religiose Giovanni XXIII and Academic Associate of the Volos Academy (“Athanasius’ Letter to Virgins: The Interpretation of the Song of Songs in the Service of Spiritual Perfection”).

    The primary goal of St. John Chrysostom Orthodox Research Group is to bring together students, junior scholars, doctors as well as well known theologians, by offering a quality environment for enabling theological research. The proceedings of the conference will be published by the Volos Academy Publications during the second semester of 2019.
