Latin American Liberation Theology is shaped by two historical events: the Cuban Revolution and Vatican II. This lecture asks what influences, if any, Orthodox Theology has on Latin American Libera-tion Theology. A consideration of Russian Emigré Theology is important since many of the first generation of Latin American Liberation Theologians studied in Europe, where Paris was the cultural capital of Russians abroad. In fact, while Paris was the cultural capital, the River Plate Basin (Buenos Aires and Montevideo) and Latin America was at the periphery of Russian Emigré Movements and Theology. Russian ideas circulated widely in Latin America from the 19th century onwards, due to migration and publishing. Freedom and liberation have been key concepts adopted and adapted by Latin American Liberation Theologians from Russian Emigré Theology.

Graham McGeoch is a theologian and minister of the Church of Scotland. He served on the Geneva-based World Council of Churches Executive and its Central Committee (2006-2013).
